Santa Clarita Officials Hold Public Meeting on E-Bikes and E-Motorcycles

Santa Clarita officials and representatives of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station are scheduled to meet with residents Tuesday evening, August 4, to discuss e-bikes and e-motorcycles, including California laws, local safety concerns, education and enforcement.

The community meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, in the City Hall Council Chambers at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.

Meeting will focus on laws, safety and enforcement

The City of Santa Clarita says the joint meeting will cover current California regulations, local trends and issues involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles, along with education, enforcement and safety efforts.

Representatives from the city and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station are expected to provide an overview of current regulations, discuss local concerns and answer questions from attendees.

Residents will also have an opportunity to provide comments about e-bike and e-motorcycle safety and enforcement. The city says that feedback will help inform ongoing public education efforts and its evaluation of potential next steps.

The meeting is a public discussion and planning opportunity. The information released ahead of the meeting does not announce newly adopted rules, a ban, a new citation policy or another final enforcement measure.

City cites concerns around busy public areas

In a July 11 safety message, Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin described city concerns about unsafe riding, including excessive speeds, ignored traffic signals and riding in crowded areas. He also said some electric motorcycles are being used on sidewalks, paseos and public trails where they are not permitted.

The city said the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station would increase enforcement efforts, particularly around parks, schools, trails and other high-traffic areas. The city’s message said violations may result in citations, fines and, in some cases, vehicle impounds.

Those statements reflect the city’s stated safety concerns and enforcement focus. The materials released before the meeting do not provide a quantified finding about the number of incidents or riders involved.

What residents can ask

Parents, riders, pedestrians and drivers can use the meeting to ask which California rules apply to particular vehicles, where riding is allowed and how local education and enforcement efforts operate near schools, parks and trails.

Public comments may help shape future outreach or policy discussions. However, Santa Clarita had not announced a specific next-step decision in the information released ahead of the August 4 meeting.
