Santa Clarita Council Nomination Filing Deadline Is Friday
Santa Clarita’s nomination filing period for three City Council seats ends Friday, Aug. 7, shaping the candidate field for the city’s Nov. 3, 2026, General Municipal Election.
The filing period began July 13 and applies to council seats in Districts 2, 4 and 5. The election will fill three four-year City Council terms.
The regular deadline is not necessarily the last possible filing date for every eligible candidate. Under the Santa Clarita City Clerk’s election guidance, if an incumbent whose term expires in 2026 does not file by the regular deadline, the filing period may be extended for other eligible candidates until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
What the deadline means
The Friday deadline will determine which candidates complete the nomination process in time to seek one of the three seats on the November municipal ballot. It also establishes whether the special incumbent-related extension can become available.
That extension is conditional. It does not automatically apply to every candidate or every district. It depends on whether an incumbent whose term expires in 2026 fails to file by Aug. 7.
The approved city election information does not identify which candidates had filed by the regular deadline. It also does not establish whether an incumbent failed to file, whether the possible extension was triggered or whether any of the three seats is contested or uncontested.

Signature requirement
Nomination papers must contain between 20 and 30 voter signatures. At least 20 signatures must be verified for the papers to be valid.
The signature requirement is part of the qualification process for candidates seeking the District 2, District 4 or District 5 seats. Meeting the numerical requirement does not, by itself, provide a candidate list or establish the outcome of a district’s race; the available sources do not provide those later filing results.
Election timeline
The Santa Clarita City Council formally called and gave notice of the General Municipal Election on May 12, 2026. The council action set the election for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, and identified the three four-year terms in Districts 2, 4 and 5.
The nomination period runs from July 13 through Aug. 7. If the incumbent-related condition is met, the next known deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 12 for other eligible candidates. The extension remains a possibility rather than a confirmed event unless the city provides an official filing update showing that the condition applies.
