Sartell Sabres shine in busy winter sports weekend

Sabres hockey skates to another conference crown

Sartell sports fans are riding a wave this weekend, with Sabres teams piling up big storylines on the ice and the hardwood.

The boys hockey team made the loudest statement, cruising past Detroit Lakes 6-1 on Friday to lock up a fifth straight Central Lakes Conference title. Sartell scored twice in every period and cooled off a Lakers group that had been rolling in recent weeks. citeturn2search1

The victory follows a 10-1 home win over Fergus Falls earlier in the week, pushing the Sabres’ streak into double digits and underscoring how explosive this lineup looks heading toward the postseason. citeturn2search7

Boys basketball mixes milestones and momentum

On the basketball court, the Sartell boys have seen both celebration and hard lessons over the last two days.

Thursday’s road loss at Alexandria, 84-73, came with a major personal milestone as senior forward Maddox Lewis poured in 23 points and became just the ninth player in program history to score 1,000 career points. citeturn2search0

Less than 48 hours later, Sartell responded with a statement win at Detroit Lakes. After trailing by double digits in the first half, the Sabres battled back to tie the game by halftime, then opened the second half on a quick run and never gave back control in an 85-75 victory. citeturn2search9

Girls basketball keeps grinding on the road

The Sartell girls basketball team ran into a balanced Willmar squad Friday night, falling 72-47 in a Central Lakes and Section 8AAA matchup. Willmar put four players in double figures, while Sartell slipped to 8-13 overall in a schedule packed with tough conference opponents. citeturn2search3

Even with the loss, the experience should help a young group that is trying to tighten defense and find more scoring balance before the playoff seeding picture is set later this month.

From packed hockey arenas to loud high school gyms, it is shaping up to be a full winter sports weekend for Sartell families — and an early preview of what could be an exciting February on the ice and the court.
