Apartment fire ruled arson; sprinklers limit flames but flood multiple floors
Seattle firefighters were called to an apartment building near Rainier Avenue South on Tuesday morning after a blaze broke out in a fourth-floor laundry room. The fire was quickly contained, but the sprinkler system activated across multiple floors, leaving residents to deal with widespread water damage. Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set, and police say the search is now focused on identifying who started it.
In a separate early-morning incident the same day, officers tracked down a reportedly stolen vehicle tied to a robbery. Police said the driver fled, leading to a chase that continued south through multiple jurisdictions before it ended in Des Moines after the vehicle became disabled. One person was arrested on suspicion of robbery, auto theft, and eluding.
Travel heads-up: major weekend closures and ongoing lane reductions
If you drive in and around Seattle, plan for a rougher-than-usual weekend commute. Transportation officials announced a full closure of State Route 522 at the I-405 interchange in Bothell from late Friday night through early Monday morning, alongside additional I-405 ramp closures near Renton.
Closer to the city, officials also warned that northbound I-5 through Seattle remains reduced to two lanes for ongoing work, and northbound SR 99 continues with lane reductions near the First Avenue South Bridge. Expect backups, especially during midday errands and evening return trips.
Capitol Hill summer street festivals: lineups announced, dates shift
Capitol Hill’s big street-festival season got an early jolt this week with a new round of lineup announcements. Organizers confirmed the Queer/Pride Festival plans to return in June, while the Capitol Hill Block Party is bringing back a three-day format and shifting later on the calendar, set for August 7–10.
For neighbors, the practical takeaway is timing: the area’s busiest summer weekends may look a little different in 2026, with another high-attendance stretch landing in early August.
