Shadow JQ Robinson begins tenure as Frostburg State University president

Dr. Shadow JQ Robinson began serving as president of Frostburg State University on July 1, 2026, taking over the university’s top leadership position from interim president Darlene Brannigan Smith.

Smith had served as interim president since Jan. 21, 2025. Robinson’s arrival begins a new leadership chapter for the Frostburg institution, which is one of Western Maryland’s largest civic and economic institutions.

Priorities for the university

Frostburg State said Robinson will emphasize student success and strengthen relationships between the university, employers and school systems. Paid internships and workforce alignment are also among the priorities identified for his presidency.

The university described those priorities as part of a broader regional focus. Robinson’s work is expected to involve partnerships with employers, schools, health-care organizations, nonprofits and local governments.

Robinson’s background

Robinson and his wife relocated from Arkansas to Western Maryland as he began the new position. His arrival brings a president with experience in academic affairs to a university that serves as a major civic and economic institution in the region.
