Shaker Heights Rail Shutdown Runs Through Aug. 15 With Bus Replacements

Blue and Green Line trains remain suspended in Shaker Heights as of Thursday, July 30, while the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority carries out track maintenance. The scheduled rail shutdown is set to continue through Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026.

For commuters, students, workers and residents who normally use the rail lines, the practical change is that travel through the affected corridors requires replacement buses rather than regular train-platform service.

How replacement service works

GCRTA is operating replacement routes 67R and 68R along the affected Blue and Green Line corridors. The buses connect with Tower City and travel toward the Warrensville-Van Aken or Green Road areas, depending on the route.

Riders should use the designated replacement-bus boarding locations listed by GCRTA instead of going to the normal rail platforms. The agency’s current schedule identifies the active service dates, stops and wheelchair-accessible replacement service.

One important exception is Tri-C-Campus District Station. The replacement buses do not serve that station, so riders whose trips involve it should review the current GCRTA information before leaving.

Where Shaker Heights residents may see work activity

A City of Shaker Heights construction notice identifies moving work zones on Shaker Boulevard from Coventry Road to Green Road and on Van Aken Boulevard from Drexmore Road to Warrensville-Van Aken. The notice describes the work as part of the maintenance period connected to the rail shutdown.

Because the work zones are moving areas, people traveling through those corridors should watch for active construction activity and follow posted instructions. The available notices do not establish that every part of either boulevard will be closed at the same time.

What riders should check

The Aug. 15 date is the scheduled end of the replacement-bus period, not confirmation that rail service has already resumed or that the work will finish early. Riders should check the latest GCRTA schedule for stop locations, service timing and accessibility information before traveling.

The shutdown may require additional planning for daily trips through Shaker Heights, particularly for people connecting to downtown Cleveland or traveling along the Blue and Green Line corridors. Riders should allow time to locate the designated bus boarding areas and confirm the service information for their trip.
