Southfield opens cooling centers as extreme heat closes city buildings
Southfield is opening cooling centers and closing city buildings at noon as the extreme heat continues. Outdoor youth sports are also canceled through July 3.
Southfield is telling residents to plan around the heat and around the city’s reduced hours. The city posted a cooling-center notice for the Parks & Recreation Building on Evergreen Road and said the Municipal Building, Parks & Recreation Building, and Public Service Building will close at noon because of the extreme heat.
For residents, the practical impact is simple: check before you go if you need city services, and use the cooling center if you need relief from the weather. Southfield says cooling-center hours are posted Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The city also canceled outdoor youth flag football, tennis, and Tuesday-through-Thursday softball through Friday, July 3. The National Weather Service office in Detroit/Pontiac says the region remains under dangerous heat and humidity, with the heat index expected to stay above 105 degrees.
That makes this more than a calendar change. Older adults, outdoor workers, and anyone without reliable air conditioning should limit time outside, especially during the hottest part of the day, and watch Southfield’s site for any further updates.
