Springfield Road Closures Continue as 5th and Capitol Work Advances
Several Springfield streets remain closed or restricted as the city continues intersection, bridge, sewer and street-repair work across the city. Capitol Avenue is closed through August 2026 for improvements at 5th and Capitol, while other closures will remain in place into 2027.
The City of Springfieldโs road and construction update for the week of July 27 lists the work as ongoing. The closures affect downtown access, traffic routes and neighborhood travel while public-works projects continue.
5th and Capitol work continues through August
Capitol Avenue has been closed since April 20 for improvements at the 5th and Capitol intersection. The city lists the closure as continuing through August 2026. Fifth Street also has partial lane closures connected to the project.
The cityโs update does not give a specific completion day within August. For people traveling near the intersection, the project means continued restrictions on Capitol Avenue and reduced lane availability on 5th Street while the improvements advance.
The 5th and Capitol work is one part of a broader public-works update. The city separately lists extended closures on 13th Street and North Grand Avenue, along with sewer rehabilitation and street repairs in other parts of Springfield.
Closures extend into 2027
Thirteenth Street between North Grand Avenue and the NSRR is closed through 2027. The update also lists North Grand Avenue between 9th and 11th streets as closed through January 2027.
Those longer closure periods keep major travel restrictions in place after the Capitol Avenue work is scheduled to end. The city identifies the North Grand work in connection with the North Grand Avenue underpass or overpass area.
The public update does not provide a specific completion date for the 13th Street closure beyond 2027. It also does not state how traffic volumes have changed or quantify any added travel time. Drivers and residents should rely on posted closures and current roadway conditions rather than assume a particular delay or detour time.
Sewer and brick-street work also listed
Springfield is conducting sanitary-sewer rehabilitation in Timberlane Subdivision and other listed areas. The city describes some of that work as ongoing without giving a current completion date.
Brick-street repairs are scheduled on Governor Street between Douglas Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. The work is separate from the 5th and Capitol intersection improvements and from the closures listed on 13th Street and North Grand Avenue.
Together, the projects show why road conditions and restrictions vary by neighborhood. Some closures are tied to a defined period, such as Capitol Avenue through August and North Grand Avenue through January 2027. Other work remains active without a stated end date.
What happens next
The cityโs current update keeps the listed closures and restrictions in effect while construction proceeds. Capitol Avenue is expected to remain closed through August 2026, 13th Street remains closed through 2027, and North Grand Avenue between 9th and 11th streets remains closed through January 2027.
Additional updates will be needed as the city moves projects toward completion. The current notice does not provide a total project cost for the work or a more precise completion date for the Capitol Avenue closure.
