Spurs Clinch Playoffs as Crime Drops and Transit Plan Moves Forward

San Antonio, TX – March 21, 2026 – Spurs clinch playoffs, violent crime trends downward, and a $1.9B transit plan heads to public review.

It has been a busy week across San Antonio, with major updates in public safety, sports and transportation planning.

Spurs Headed Back to the Playoffs

The San Antonio Spurs clinched their first NBA playoff berth since the 2018-19 season with a March 19 win over the Phoenix Suns. The milestone caps a remarkable turnaround year for the team, which has steadily improved throughout the season and secured a winning record in February.

For fans, it marks a return to postseason basketball after several rebuilding years. City leaders and downtown businesses are also preparing for the economic bump that typically follows a playoff run.

Violent Crime Declines in 2025

New data released this week show most violent crime categories declined in San Antonio in 2025. Homicides dropped by nearly 16 percent, robberies fell by more than 17 percent, and aggravated assaults decreased by about 9 percent compared with the previous year.

Officials say the trend mirrors national patterns as many large cities report easing crime rates following pandemic-era spikes. One exception locally: reported rapes saw a slight increase year over year.

$1.9 Billion Transportation Plan Opens for Input

The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization hosted public meetings March 18 and 19 in San Antonio as part of its draft 2027-2030 Transportation Improvement Program.

The proposal outlines roughly $1.9 billion in transportation projects expected to move toward construction over the next four years. Residents were invited to review planned roadway, transit and mobility upgrades and submit feedback before the plan is finalized.
