Storm cleanup gives way to schedule changes

After a week of heavy snow and ice, city crews are gradually shifting from emergency cleanup to more routine city services. Officials say most streets now have at least one clear lane, and attention is turning to widening travel corridors and restoring normal trash and recycling operations.

Looking ahead, the city has released its operating schedule for Presidents Day on Monday, February 16. City offices and administrative buildings will be closed, and the public library and recycling center will also pause operations for the holiday. Residential trash that would normally be picked up on Monday will instead be collected on Wednesday, with extra bags allowed to help residents catch up after the winter disruption.

Drivers warned about upcoming lane closures

State transportation staff are advising drivers across the Staunton area to prepare for lane closures and changing traffic patterns next week. Maintenance work and construction projects along key corridors are scheduled from Monday, February 9, through Friday, February 13, with the exact timing dependent on weather and road conditions.

Crews will be out on interstates and primary routes throughout the Staunton district, including bridge maintenance and tree trimming in some stretches. Drivers are urged to slow down in work zones, watch for flaggers and shifting lanes, and allow extra time for commutes, especially during the morning and late afternoon rush.

Community spotlight: Gypsy Hill yard sale

For residents ready to get out of the house after the storm, Gypsy Hill Park is hosting a community yard sale at the park gym today from 8 a.m. to noon. The indoor event offers a chance to browse local tables, pick up household items, and support neighbors who are clearing out closets after the long winter.

Parking is available around the park, and families are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection. Organizers say the sale is designed as a low-cost way for residents to connect, recycle gently used goods, and enjoy a bit of normalcy as the city transitions from storm response into a more typical February routine.
