Storm Alerts, Festival Return and Traffic Fatality Lead Honolulu Headlines
Honolulu, HI – March 10, 2026 – A powerful kona storm prompts flood alerts as Honolulu Festival returns, HPD reports traffic fatality, and UH baseball is swept.
Honolulu is bracing for a busy and potentially hazardous week as severe weather, a major cultural festival and public safety concerns top local headlines.
Powerful Kona Storm Triggers Flood Alerts
The National Weather Service has declared multiple First Alert Weather Days as a large kona storm moves toward Oahu. Forecasters warn of heavy rain, flash flooding, strong winds and the possibility of severe thunderstorms through at least Saturday.
Rainfall totals could reach double digits in some areas, with higher elevations seeing even more. Officials are urging residents to clear drains, secure outdoor items and avoid driving through flooded roadways as conditions deteriorate.
Motorcycle Crash Marks 10th Traffic Fatality
Honolulu police are investigating a deadly motorcycle crash that occurred March 6 in the Hawaii Kai area. Authorities say a 39-year-old rider lost control after colliding with another motorcycle and was ejected onto the roadway. He later died at a hospital.
Police reported the rider was not wearing a helmet. The incident marks Oahu’s 10th traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 16 at the same time last year. The investigation remains ongoing.
Honolulu Festival Celebrates 30 Years
Despite the unsettled forecast, organizers are preparing for the 30th annual Honolulu Festival, set for March 13 to 15 in Waikiki and surrounding venues. The celebration will feature cultural performances, a grand parade along Kalakaua Avenue and the popular Nagaoka fireworks show over Waikiki Beach.
Events will take place at the Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Center and Waikiki Beach Walk, with both ticketed and free activities planned.
UH Baseball Swept in Big West Opening Series
On the sports front, the University of Hawaii baseball team dropped all three games in its opening Big West series against Cal Poly at Les Murakami Stadium. The sweep marks a challenging start to the Rainbow Warriors’ final season in the conference.
UH will look to regroup as conference play continues.
