Surprise Daily Brief: Protests, Crash, and City Hall Activity
Surprise, AZ — February 6, 2026 — Protests over a proposed ICE facility, a deadly overnight crash, and a busy stretch of city meetings shape today’s update.
Federal Warehouse Purchase Sparks Protests
Community concern remains high after confirmation that a large warehouse in Surprise was purchased by the federal government and may be used for immigration processing or detention. The city says it was not consulted on the purchase, and officials have emphasized that local government has limited authority over how the property is used.
In recent days, residents packed City Hall to voice opposition, citing worries about transparency, neighborhood impacts, and nearby schools. City leaders have acknowledged the frustration while noting they are still seeking clearer information about the facility’s timeline and purpose.
Overnight Crash Closes Major Intersection
Surprise police are investigating a deadly crash that shut down the intersection of Grand Avenue and Dysart Road early Friday morning. Officers responded around 3 a.m. and found a severe collision involving multiple vehicles.
One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a dog in one of the vehicles also did not survive. Several others were taken to area hospitals with injuries. The intersection remained closed for several hours before reopening later in the morning.
City Meetings and Community Events Continue
It has been a busy week at City Hall, with multiple council and commission meetings taking place across Surprise. Recent gatherings included a special City Council meeting, arts and cultural events, and a job fair hosted in partnership with workforce agencies.
City officials say these meetings are part of ongoing efforts to engage residents on development, public services, and community programming. Additional neighborhood outreach meetings and advisory commission events are scheduled in the coming days.
What to Watch
Residents can expect continued discussion around the federal warehouse site, updates from the ongoing crash investigation, and more public meetings as the city moves through a packed February calendar.
