SWAT Standoff, I-69 Crashes and New Development Plans Lead Fort Wayne Headlines
Fort Wayne, IN – March 17, 2026 – A SWAT response, major I-69 traffic jams, and new housing and retail plans top recent local headlines.
It has been a busy few days across Fort Wayne, with public safety responses, highway crashes and long-term development plans making headlines.
SWAT Response on City’s South Side
Fort Wayne police and SWAT officers responded to a mental health crisis at a home off Lower Huntington Road on Monday. Authorities said the individual inside initially refused to come out, prompting a standoff that drew a heavy law enforcement presence.
Officers worked to safely resolve the situation, and no broader threat to the public was reported. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges first responders face when handling mental health emergencies.
Multiple Crashes Snarl I-69 Traffic
Drivers on the city’s northwest side faced major delays Monday after multiple crashes along Interstate 69. Two northbound lanes near the Goshen Road exit were shut down for a time, creating a lengthy backup during the afternoon commute.
Emergency crews cleared the scene and reopened lanes later in the day, but the traffic jam stretched for miles at its peak. Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes while crews worked.
City Seeks Input on Housing Plan
City leaders are asking residents to weigh in on Fort Wayne’s 2026–2030 consolidated housing plan. The federally required plan will guide how funding is spent on housing, neighborhood improvements and community development projects over the next five years.
Officials say community feedback will help prioritize affordable housing, infrastructure upgrades and support services. Public meetings and surveys are expected as the process moves forward.
Plan Commission Advances QuikTrip Proposal
In development news, the Fort Wayne Plan Commission voted to recommend City Council approval of plans for a new QuikTrip near Coldwater Road. The proposal now moves to council for final consideration.
If approved, the project would add another retail and fuel option along the busy corridor, an area that has seen steady commercial growth.
