Tampa Daily Local Headlines: I-75 Fatal Crash, Ybor Safety Work, Safe Emergency Landing
Tampa, FL – March 4, 2026 – A deadly I-75 crash snarled commutes, Ybor City safety upgrades advance, and landing ends safely at TIA; ShredFest is set Saturday.
Local Headlines
1) Deadly I-75 crash disrupts commutes
A fatal crash on northbound Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County forced lane closures and major backups this week. Investigators say a pickup truck struck the rear of a box truck while trying to pass, then overturned multiple times. The driver was ejected and later hit by a tractor-trailer in the center lanes, authorities reported.
Drivers were urged to expect lingering congestion and to use extra caution near slowed or stopped traffic, especially around large trucks.
2) Ybor City safety improvements begin on Seventh Avenue
Work is underway in Ybor City on a package of near-term street changes aimed at reducing speeding and improving safety along Seventh Avenue. The first phase includes repaving a stretch between Nebraska Avenue and Nuccio Parkway, along with added on-street parking and bus bay changes intended to narrow the travel way and naturally slow vehicles approaching the district.
Additional steps outlined by officials include lowering the speed limit to 25 mph, adding four-way stops at selected intersections, increasing patrol presence, and planning for safety bollards at high-volume crosswalks. The paving portion is expected to be completed within the first two weeks of March.
3) Small plane lands safely after mechanical issues
A single-engine aircraft with only the pilot aboard made an emergency landing late Tuesday night after experiencing mechanical trouble, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The plane attempted to land on Weaver Lane, struck a power line and a tree, and came down near Weaver Lane and Rockhill Road.
Authorities said the pilot was evaluated at the scene and was not injured.
4) Free ShredFest drive-thru event set for Saturday
Hillsborough County is hosting its annual ShredFest this Saturday morning at Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa. Residents can bring sensitive paper records for on-site shredding (with per-vehicle limits) and drop off devices like laptops, tablets, hard drives, and cell phones for secure electronic data destruction. The event is drive-thru and first come, first served.
