Teen cyclist hospitalized after Olathe crosswalk crash

A 15-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a pickup struck him while he rode a bicycle through a crosswalk in Olathe, police said.

The crash happened at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 135th Street and Blackfoot Drive in Olathe. Olathe Police said their initial investigation indicated the boy was crossing 135th Street from south to north when a pickup turning right from southbound Blackfoot Drive onto westbound 135th Street hit him. Responders found him beneath the pickup and took him to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police did not arrest or cite the driver at the scene and said the investigation was ongoing. Westbound lanes of 135th Street were closed for about two and a half hours during the on-scene investigation. Police had not announced a final determination of fault.
