Utility Rates, Tax Freeze Proposal and I-10 Expansion Shape Chandler’s 2026 Outlook
Chandler is navigating a pivotal stretch as city finances, state politics and transportation upgrades converge this spring.
Utility Rates Now in Effect
A 15% across-the-board utility rate increase took effect March 2, impacting water, wastewater and solid waste bills. City leaders have said the adjustment supports aging infrastructure, rising operational costs and long-term system reliability.
For many households, the combined monthly utility bill now averages around the low $80 range, depending on usage. Officials have emphasized that revenue will be directed toward system maintenance, capital improvements and service stability as costs for treatment, equipment and labor continue to climb.
State Tax Freeze Proposal Raises Local Budget Questions
At the state level, lawmakers advanced HCR2016 this week, a proposal that would ask voters to freeze city and county taxes, fees and utility rates for four years. Supporters describe it as an affordability measure. Critics argue it could limit cities’ ability to respond to inflation, infrastructure demands and public safety needs.
For Chandler, where long-range capital planning includes streets, parks, public safety facilities and utility systems, any multi-year revenue freeze could complicate funding schedules or delay projects.
I-10 Widening Project Nears Key Milestones
Meanwhile, construction continues on the Interstate 10 corridor south of Loop 202 in Chandler. The $1 billion expansion adds general purpose lanes and HOV capacity between Chandler and Casa Grande, with completion targeted this year.
The project is designed to ease freight and commuter congestion while supporting regional economic growth. Local businesses and residents can expect intermittent construction impacts through late 2026 as final phases are completed.
Together, these developments underscore the balancing act facing Chandler: maintaining infrastructure, supporting growth and managing affordability in a fast-evolving regional economy.
