Vancouver Sewer Extension Enters Final Weeks of Construction
Construction on Vancouver’s Northeast 60th Street Sewer Extension Project is entering its final scheduled weeks, with crews expected to continue installing about 4,300 feet of new sewer main through late August 2026.
The project began in early April and covers a roughly five-mile network of Northeast Vancouver streets. The work is intended to extend reliable public sewer service to properties in the service area that currently use septic systems.
For people who live on or travel through the construction area, the immediate effect is a changing pattern of weekday closures, lane shifts and flagger operations. The city expects those traffic controls to remain in place as crews move through the remaining sections of the project.
Six streets are included
Construction affects Northeast 60th Street, Northeast 59th Street, Northeast 56th Avenue, Northeast 46th Avenue, Northeast 41st Avenue and Northeast St. Johns Road.
The streets form the local network where the sewer main is being installed. Because work is distributed across multiple routes, access conditions may change as construction advances from one segment to another rather than remaining fixed at a single location.
The City of Vancouver’s Public Works department is administering the project. The city describes the extension as a way to make public sewer service available to septic owners in the service area.
Weekday traffic changes will continue
Work generally runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. During those hours, drivers and residents may encounter temporary street closures, lane shifts and flaggers directing traffic around active construction.
Neighborhood closures are expected to reopen at the end of each work shift, and the roads are expected to be open on weekends. That schedule means the project’s traffic effects are temporary construction impacts rather than permanent road closures, but weekday access may still vary depending on where crews are working.
People using the six affected streets should allow additional time during construction hours, watch for signs and follow directions from flaggers. Residents with regular trips through the Northeast 60th Street area may see the traffic pattern change as installation proceeds along the sewer route.
What the project changes
The central purpose of the extension is utility access. Properties that currently rely on septic systems are in the area intended to receive expanded access to public sewer service once the project is completed.
The project is part of the city’s broader 2026 infrastructure and public-works activity. In practical terms, the work trades recurring short-term disruptions on local streets for the planned expansion of a public utility network serving the project area.
The city’s late-August target is an anticipated completion window, not a specific final completion date. Until the work is finished, weekday traffic controls may continue along the listed streets. The next known milestone is continued sewer-main installation through late August 2026.
