Wall Collapse, Retail Expansion, and Parkway Closure Lead Yonkers Headlines
Yonkers, NY – March 7, 2026 – A wall collapse injures one, Cross County Center expands, and a key parkway ramp faces overnight closure.
It has been a busy few days across Yonkers, with emergency crews responding to a dramatic collapse, new development underway at a major shopping hub, and drivers preparing for an overnight road closure.
Wall Collapse Injures Driver
A roughly 40-foot section of retaining wall came crashing down onto a car near the corner of Landscape Avenue and Caryl Avenue earlier this week.
Authorities say a man was sitting inside the vehicle when the wall gave way. He was able to get out before first responders arrived and was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The collapse scattered dirt and debris into the roadway and temporarily shut down Caryl Avenue, a key route for school buses. Officials are still investigating what caused the wall to fail.
Major Expansion at Cross County Center
Construction has officially begun on a significant retail expansion at Cross County Center.
The project will add two new buildings totaling about 58,000 square feet. Plans also include a new four-acre park and boardwalk area designed to serve as a welcoming entrance to the longtime shopping destination.
Developers say demand for space at the center prompted the expansion. Cross County, which first opened in 1954, now features more than 100 retail and dining options.
Overnight Parkway Ramp Closure
Drivers should plan ahead for an overnight closure early next week.
The eastbound ramp from the Cross County Parkway to Exit 6 for the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers is scheduled to close Monday, March 9, from midnight to 5 a.m., weather permitting. The temporary shutdown will allow crews to complete guide rail work.
Motorists are advised to follow posted detours and use caution in the work zone.
Yonkers Idol Auditions This Weekend
On a lighter note, Yonkers Idol and Yonkers Junior Idol auditions are set for Saturday at Yonkers Montessori Academy.
The annual competition, now in its eighteenth year, is open to Yonkers residents ages 10 to 19. Winners receive a cash prize and perform at city events throughout the year.
