What to know
Public safety: wall collapse
Neighbors reported loud booms Wednesday when a section of retaining wall came down at the corner of Landscape Avenue and Caryl Avenue. Authorities said the wall section was roughly 40 feet long and 10 feet high and fell onto a vehicle with a person inside. The driver was able to get out before crews finished securing the scene and was transported for medical care.
The street closure temporarily affected traffic and, according to reports, forced school bus route adjustments in the area while the city checked for additional hazards and investigated what caused the failure.
City Hall: housing and local law votes
At the City Council stated meeting held Feb. 24, members approved a package that included authorizing the conveyance of the former Public School 9 property for redevelopment, described as a residential project with about 65 market-rate apartments. The Council also approved changes connected to the city code and zoning framework that, as described, aim to strengthen requirements for affordable units in newly constructed multifamily housing.
Business: Cross County Center and real estate
Construction is now underway on an expansion at Cross County Center. Plans described in a local report include roughly 58,000 square feet of added retail space, new buildings, and a proposed four-acre public park designed for community programming.
Separately, a real estate brokerage reported adding eight agents to its Yonkers operation, expanding a local office that now has more than 40 agents. The move was framed as a bet on continued demand in southern Westchester, where recent median pricing cited in the report topped $700,000.
Local politics: campaign fundraising
A first-time State Assembly candidate said a packed fundraiser in Yonkers brought in more than $100,000, with organizers pointing to small-dollar contributions that could help maximize public matching funds.
