Washington, DC Daily Brief: Potomac Spill, Snow Delays, Lunar New Year
Washington, DC – February 23, 2026 – Potomac spill repairs continue, snow prompts delays and shelter alerts, and Chinatown celebrates Lunar New Year.
1) Potomac River sewage spill: advisory timeline comes into focus
Crews are still working on the Potomac Interceptor break that sent massive amounts of sewage into the river earlier this month. For now, the District is continuing its advisory to avoid recreational contact with the Potomac, including boating, fishing and letting pets into the water.
Officials say bacteria readings have generally improved away from the immediate discharge area, and they are aiming for a possible lift of the contact advisory around March 2 if testing remains steady. Monitoring is also ramping up, with more frequent public reporting expected as responsibility shifts to environmental health teams. A community meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at DC Water headquarters.
At the federal level, EPA has been named the lead agency to coordinate the response with local and state partners.
2) Snow, delays and cold-weather safety measures hit Monday morning
Overnight snow and bitter wind chills are reshaping the Monday commute. DC Public Schools is opening on a two-hour delay on Monday, Feb. 23, while DC Government is operating on time.
Federal employees in the D.C. area are also under a two-hour delayed arrival, with options for unscheduled leave or telework. The city is urging residents to use the shelter hotline and take advantage of hypothermia shelters as an Extreme Cold Alert remains in effect early Monday.
Drivers are being reminded that parking restrictions can kick in on snow emergency routes to keep plows moving curb-to-curb.
3) Chinatown turns out for Lunar New Year celebrations
Despite wet weather, crowds filled the streets around the Chinatown arch on Sunday for the Lunar New Year parade, with lion dances, marching groups and a burst of firecrackers closing out the route. The event put a spotlight on local community groups and small businesses in the neighborhood.
