DC Public Schools Open on Two-Hour Delay
Washington, DC — February 2, 2026 — In response to ongoing extreme cold conditions, DC Public Schools will open on a two-hour delay today. Families with students enrolled at public charter schools should expect direct communication from their respective institutions regarding any operational changes. The DC Government will operate on its regular schedule.
Extreme Cold Alert and Shelter Services
The Extreme Cold Alert remains in effect, emphasizing the importance of staying indoors when possible and covering exposed skin when outside. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with access and functional needs, as they are particularly vulnerable during such conditions. For individuals experiencing homelessness, the District has opened hypothermia shelters to provide warm, safe spaces. To request free, accessible transportation to these shelters, call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311. In case of immediate medical emergencies, call 911.
Snow Clearing Responsibilities
With the potential for snow accumulation, residents are reminded of their responsibilities regarding snow and ice removal. Property owners not enrolled in the Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption Program are required to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks after a snow event. Commercial property owners must also ensure their sidewalks are cleared. Additionally, restaurant owners are advised to bring in all outdoor furniture and elements, except for barriers, to prevent potential damage during winter conditions.
