Waterloo’s La Porte Road project now listed for November letting

Two additional segments of Waterloo’s La Porte Road reconstruction are listed for an estimated Nov. 17, 2026, Iowa Department of Transportation letting, while another phase of the project is already closed.

The schedule matters for drivers, nearby residents and businesses because the current closure between Grimm Street and Bopp Street is separate from the two segments awaiting letting: Bopp Street to Plymouth Avenue and Plymouth Avenue to the U.S. 218 slip ramp.

Two segments are listed for a November letting

Iowa DOT’s estimated target report, generated July 10, 2026, lists both Waterloo segments for Nov. 17, 2026. One covers La Porte Road from Bopp Street north about 0.5 miles to Plymouth Avenue. The other covers La Porte Road from Plymouth Avenue north about 0.7 miles to the U.S. 218 slip ramp.

The report describes both projects as concrete pavement grading and replacement. Iowa DOT also says the dates are estimated target dates, that plans and proposals were not currently available in the report and that future letting dates are subject to change.

A letting is the process in which the transportation agency seeks bids for the work. It is not, by itself, a guaranteed physical construction start date. Construction timing would depend on bidding, award and the final project schedule.

Funding records show revisions

Iowa DOT’s 2026-2029 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program records show federal-aid revisions for both La Porte Road segments.

For the Bopp Street-to-Plymouth Avenue segment, the federal-aid amount changed from $8,411,900 to $9,208,845 in a Jan. 5, 2026, administrative modification. Iowa DOT said the change corrected the RAISE grant funding amount to match the federal grant agreement.

A separate modification posted in January changed that segment’s federal-aid amount from $9,208,845 to $9,078,710. Iowa DOT said the project moved from fiscal year 2028 to fiscal year 2026 and that the reduction was tied to the project schedule and fiscal constraint, including a decrease in STBG funding from $4,711,900 to $4,581,765.

For the Plymouth Avenue-to-U.S. 218 slip-ramp segment, the federal-aid amount changed from $10,900,500 to $11,190,995. Iowa DOT said that modification also corrected the RAISE grant amount to match the federal grant agreement.

These are revisions recorded in the transportation program. They should not be treated as final total project costs without additional project documents.

One phase is already closed

The City of Waterloo’s road-construction information says the La Porte Road section from Grimm Street to Bopp Street closed May 26, 2026. That active closure is not the same segment as the two sections Iowa DOT lists for the estimated November letting.

That distinction matters for people who use La Porte Road to reach homes, businesses, nearby streets and U.S. 218. Drivers should follow posted signs and current city instructions rather than assume that the entire reconstruction project is under construction at the same time.

Earlier reporting cited water-main work and materials

In a May 15, 2026, report, the Waterloo Courier said the Grimm Street-to-Bopp Street closure had been delayed because Waterloo Water Works wanted to add water-main work and the contractor was waiting for materials. The report also said the city was waiting for a federal grant amendment for work extending toward U.S. 218 before bidding that section.

That report provides earlier project context. The later Iowa DOT letting report now lists the Bopp-to-Plymouth and Plymouth-to-U.S. 218 segments for Nov. 17, 2026.

What residents and businesses should watch next

The next useful confirmation will be whether Iowa DOT’s Nov. 17 target remains current and, if the segments are let, when bids are awarded and physical work is scheduled to begin.

Residents, commuters and businesses along La Porte Road should also watch for official information about construction duration, property access, delivery routes, additional closures and detours. Until those details are confirmed, the clearest schedule point is the estimated letting date—not a guaranteed construction start.
