Westborough: Flanders Road closure July 18 for I-495/I-90 bridge demo—detours

Westborough drivers and commuters should plan for traffic detours on Saturday, July 18, when MassDOT is scheduled to close Flanders Road in town from Washington Street to Connector Road to support bridge demolition work.

The closure window is 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. MassDOT says crews will demolish a section of the I-495 northbound bridge over Flanders Road as part of the broader I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements project.

Why the closure is happening

MassDOT says the closure is needed while crews demolish part of the I-495 northbound bridge over Flanders Road. The work is tied to the I-495/I-90 interchange improvement effort.

Detour instructions: east of I-495

If you’re traveling on Flanders Road east of I-495, MassDOT says you’ll be routed as follows during the closure:

• Take East Main Street
• Use Route 9 east
• Continue via Coslin Drive
• Go back to Washington Street
• Then return to Flanders Road

Detour instructions: west of I-495

If you’re traveling on Flanders Road west of I-495, MassDOT says the detour route is:

• Take Washington Street
• Continue on Coslin Drive
• Use Route 9 east
• Make a U-turn at Crystal Pond Road
• Take the exit toward Research Drive / Via Connector Road
• Continue on Computer Drive
• Use Connector Road
• Return to Flanders Road

I-495 northbound lane closures during the morning work window

MassDOT also warned that I-495 northbound will have lane closures from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. during the morning work window, with at least one lane open at all times.

Drivers should expect possible slowdowns near the I-495/I-90 interchange as crews manage traffic during the construction work.

Where to check for updates before you drive

Because construction plans can change, Westborough residents are advised to check the Town of Westborough Alert Center and follow the posted signage and instructions in the work zone before heading out.

Plan for extra travel time if your commute regularly uses Flanders Road near the interchange area.
