Whitewater intersection project enters final construction phase as mid-August completion target approaches

Construction continues at Franklin Street and W. Main Street in Whitewater as the city works toward a mid-August completion target for an intersection safety and traffic-realignment project.

The City of Whitewater began construction July 7, 2026. The project includes realigning the southeast corner of the intersection and has changed how drivers, commuters, nearby businesses and Mercyhealth visitors move through the area.

Current traffic changes

Franklin Street is closed from W. Main Street to approximately 150 feet south of the intersection. Drivers should not use that section of Franklin Street while the work is active.

W. Main Street remains open, but traffic has been reduced to one through lane in each direction. The existing traffic signals at the intersection have also been replaced temporarily with all-way stop signs.

A posted detour directs motorists through Whitewater Street and W. Main Street. Drivers approaching the intersection should follow the signs and allow additional time for the lane restrictions and temporary stop controls.

Mercyhealth access

The Mercyhealth entrance remains open during construction, but access is limited to vehicles approaching from the south. Visitors and people making deliveries should account for the Franklin Street closure when choosing an approach to the facility.

The access restriction is one of the project’s most direct effects on people who need to reach Mercyhealth. The continuing lane reduction and all-way stops also affect traffic moving along W. Main Street and vehicles traveling near the intersection.

Completion target

The city expects the project to be completed by mid-August 2026, weather permitting. That remains a target rather than a confirmed completion date.

As of Aug. 10, city notices continued to describe the Franklin Street closure, lane reduction, temporary all-way stops, south-side Mercyhealth access and the mid-August schedule. The city had not published a notice confirming that construction was complete.

Until the work is finished, residents, commuters, businesses and Mercyhealth visitors should expect the temporary traffic pattern to remain in place. Motorists should use the posted detour, observe the all-way stops and approach Mercyhealth from the south.
