Wichita Daily Brief: Sales-tax vote nears, Sunday storms, Shockers on the road
Wichita, KS – March 1, 2026 – The sales-tax question is in its final days before Tuesday’s vote, a sharp cooldown arrives with scattered thunderstorms, and Wichita State closes …
Top story: Sales-tax election heads into the final stretch
Wichita voters will decide Tuesday, March 3, on a proposed 1% citywide sales tax. With Election Day close, early participation has already stood out: county election data through Feb. 26 showed turnout running stronger than a typical special election.
If you’re planning to vote before Tuesday, the window is narrowing. Early in-person voting remains available at the county election office through noon Monday, March 2. After that, the focus shifts to Election Day voting, when polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
To make getting around simpler on Tuesday, Wichita Transit says rides will be free during regular weekday service hours. That applies to fixed-route buses and paratransit rides, and no proof of voting is required. If you’re weighing when to vote, the choice is essentially: go early at the election office by midday Monday, or head to the polls Tuesday.
- Election Day: Tuesday, March 3 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Early in-person voting: through noon Monday, March 2 (election office)
- Free transit rides: Tuesday, March 3 (bus + paratransit)
Weather watch: Big cooldown with thunderstorms
After the recent warmth, Sunday brings a noticeable temperature drop across south-central Kansas, with highs expected mainly in the 40s. Along with the chill, forecasters flagged scattered thunderstorms that could develop around midday and move east through the afternoon.
If you’re traveling northeast across Kansas, conditions may be more changeable. A light wintry mix was also considered possible in that direction, adding another layer of uncertainty for anyone on the road during the day.
Local sports: Shockers chase win No. 20
Wichita State men’s basketball wraps up its regular-season road slate Sunday night at UTSA (7 p.m. CT). The Shockers entered the matchup at 19-10 overall, looking to extend a winning streak and push toward a 20-win season.
