Sales-tax special election: early voting is open
Wichita voters are in the middle of early voting ahead of the March 3 special election on a proposed 1% citywide sales tax. Satellite early-voting sites are open Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., plus Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Early voting also continues at the county election office on weekdays, with the final in-person early-voting window ending at noon on Monday, March 2.
The ballot question would authorize the tax starting July 1, 2026, and ending no later than June 30, 2033. Supporters say it would fund major city priorities over several years; opponents have focused on cost and accountability. If you plan to vote, double-check your assigned polling place before Election Day.
Data centers: Sedgwick County considers extending its pause
Sedgwick County leaders are signaling they may extend an interim hold on new data-center applications while zoning rules are reviewed. The current 90-day control period is set to expire April 17, and county leaders have discussed pushing that deadline to June 11 to allow more time for policy work and public input.
Two public sessions are on the calendar: a listening town hall on March 12 and a follow-up town hall on March 31 focused on zoning and what options are being explored.
Fire stations: more temporary closures possible during mold work
Mold remediation is continuing across Wichita fire stations, and more temporary station closures could be ahead as crews rotate through buildings for cleanup and repairs. Station 15 is expected to remain closed for at least a couple more weeks, and additional stations could be taken offline as work schedules are set.
Weather: one more warm day, then a sharp cooldown
South-central Kansas is wrapping up February with near-record warmth, but a cold front is expected to bring a much cooler Sunday, along with chances for rain and thunderstorms. If you have outdoor plans this weekend, expect a big temperature swing and keep an eye on changing conditions.
