Winter Storm Fallout, Deadly Crashes and Airport Delays Lead Reno Headlines
Reno, NV – March 13, 2026 – Winter storm closures, deadly crashes and airport delays dominated Reno headlines this week as the region dug out.
Winter Storm Shuts Down Schools, Offices and Roads
A powerful winter storm swept through northern Nevada this week, forcing widespread closures across Reno and surrounding communities. Washoe County schools canceled classes, and state government offices temporarily shut down as heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions intensified.
Interstate 80 was closed at the Nevada-California state line during the height of the storm, with chain controls and significant travel delays reported across the Sierra. Officials urged drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Deadly Crashes on U.S. 395
Tragedy struck on U.S. 395 near the Nevada state line, where a wrong-way crash claimed the lives of two drivers. In a separate incident, another fatal crash closed northbound lanes near Village Parkway, north of Reno.
Both incidents caused extended traffic disruptions and remain under investigation. Authorities are reminding drivers to slow down and remain alert, particularly during winter weather conditions.
Airport Delays and Cancellations
The winter storm also disrupted air travel at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Multiple flights were delayed or canceled as snowfall and low visibility impacted operations.
Travelers were encouraged to check directly with airlines for updated flight information as crews worked to clear runways and maintain safe conditions.
Fire Destroys Vacant Apartment Complex
Reno fire crews responded to a blaze at a vacant apartment complex near Grove Street earlier this week. The fire heavily damaged the structure, and the building was ultimately razed.
No injuries were reported. Officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
