WisDOT plans 2027 WIS 161 work through Iola

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to begin work on WIS 161 in 2027, including resurfacing, drainage and guardrail improvements along a 10.3-mile segment from WIS 49 southbound to WIS 110 in Waupaca County.

The planned project also includes pedestrian-access work in the village of Iola. WisDOT lists completion of the project design for August 2026, while construction is currently scheduled for 2027. A firm construction start date, duration and final traffic-control calendar have not been posted on the project page.

Roadway and drainage work

WisDOT says the existing pavement shows alligator, longitudinal and transverse cracking, along with rutting. The proposed work would mill the existing asphalt and place a new asphalt overlay across approximately 10.3 miles of WIS 161.

The project also calls for replacing eight existing cross-culvert pipes, removing one cattle pass and upgrading guardrails to current design standards.

Changes identified in Iola

Within Iola, WisDOT proposes reconstructing pedestrian curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Sections of curb and gutter would also be replaced.

Temporary pedestrian curb ramps are planned during construction to maintain sidewalk access. WisDOT also says small temporary limited easements may be needed for sidewalk and curb-ramp construction, cattle-pass removal, guardrail replacement and related grading. The current project page does not identify affected parcels or property owners.

Most traffic expected to continue

WisDOT expects WIS 161 to remain open to traffic for most of the project. Drivers would move through temporary lane closures and flagging operations.

A short-term detour is anticipated while cross culverts are replaced and the cattle pass is removed. The proposed route would use US 10, WIS 22 and WIS 22/110. WisDOT says local access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

Drivers should generally expect controlled traffic and work-zone delays rather than a full-season highway closure. The timing and location of individual closures will depend on later construction planning.

Program estimate, not a final construction price

The February 2026 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program snapshot lists the project as 6260-00-72. The listing shows 10.34 miles for the project titled Iola to STH 22/110, with the limit description beginning at STH 49 southbound and extending to STH 110. It places the total improvement cost in the $4 million-to-$4.999 million range.

WisDOT says a total improvement cost can include past, current and future project phases, including work outside the four-year STIP cycle. The listing is therefore a program estimate, not confirmation that the project has been awarded or that all construction funding has been finalized.

Residents, commuters and businesses should watch for future WisDOT construction notices and check 511 Wisconsin before traveling through the WIS 161 work area in 2027.
