Relief fund aims to cushion Route 47 construction

Woodstock officials have signed off on a new relief fund to help businesses along the Route 47 corridor weather the years of construction ahead. The city is seeding the program with $50,000 from an existing loan fund and is inviting private donations to grow the pool. Grants are expected to target businesses that can show clear disruption tied to construction work once the road project ramps up.

Council members backed the idea after hearing concerns from corridor business owners about access, traffic and customer loss during construction. One council member voted no, arguing public dollars should not be used to assist private business, but the rest of the council and the mayor said the targeted grants are a reasonable way to support a key commercial corridor during an unusually disruptive project.

Route 47 expansion moves toward spring start

The Route 47 widening remains on track to begin road construction this spring, with utility relocation already underway along the 2.25 mile stretch between U.S. 14 and Illinois 120. The project will expand the road to two lanes in each direction and add new roundabouts at Lake Street, McConnell Road and Judd Street, aiming to ease congestion and improve safety.

City staff are reminding nearby property owners that items in the state right of way, such as private signs and fencing, may need to be removed to make way for utility work. The multi-year project is expected to run into 2028, so city leaders are urging residents and drivers to prepare for shifting lanes, occasional closures and a long period of construction activity.

Music, movies and eagle watching this weekend

Downtown venues are keeping things lively despite winter. Stage Left hosted singer Claudia Schmidt in concert Friday night, while the Opera House welcomed a comedy show as part of its current season. Looking ahead, a sing-along screening of “Grease” is on the calendar for later this month, part of a slate of nostalgic and family-friendly programming.

Out on the edge of town, the McHenry County Conservation District is inviting residents to join an “In Search of Eagles” program today. Naturalists are leading a guided hike near the Fox River, part of a larger regional effort to spot bald eagles at dams and lakes in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Schools spotlight

At Woodstock North High School, Friday started with a Student of the Month breakfast before students in the Academic Challenge team headed to McHenry County College for competition. In the week ahead, AVID students from North and Woodstock High School are scheduled to visit Illinois State University, and families are being reminded that parent-teacher conferences and a half-day schedule are coming up later this month.
