Wooster wakes up to bitter cold this morning, along with fresh reminders from the city about winter utilities and a busy slate of arts and nightlife to close out the week.

City utility notice and winter tips

A new utility bill insert from the city highlights several timely updates for residents. Municipal offices will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on January 19 with no trash delay that week. The notice also stresses that past-due balances are due immediately and that unpaid accounts risk water shutoffs under city ordinance.

Residents are urged to schedule bulk-item pickup with their trash hauler before setting large items at the curb, and to wrap mattresses and upholstered furniture in plastic. Appliances must have refrigerant removed and be properly tagged before collection. The message also reups familiar frozen-pipe precautions: disconnect outdoor hoses, drain lines to outside faucets, insulate exposed pipes and keep thermostats at or above 55 degrees, especially if you are away from home.

Cold advisory grips the area

Wayne County sits under a cold weather advisory through midday today, with wind chills dipping well below zero. Forecasters warn that the combination of single-digit air temperatures and steady wind could lead to frostbite on exposed skin and hypothermia for anyone outdoors too long.

Residents are encouraged to limit time outside, dress in layers, cover hands, face and ears, and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the cold. Pet owners are also being reminded to bring animals indoors and provide extra bedding for livestock during the coldest hours.

Events pack the weekend

Last night, the YMCA of Wayne County hosted its Denim and Diamonds casino fundraiser at RES on Fry Road, raising money for youth camp and child care scholarships that help families across Wayne County. The annual event combines food, games and auctions to support local kids.

Tonight, dancers and live-music fans get their turn. The Wooster Contra Dance series returns to Valley College Grange at 7 p.m., offering community dancing with live callers and musicians. Downtown, Wayne Center for the Arts continues its original production ‘Matilda: A New Dance Tale,’ with performances bringing local students to the stage for a reimagined spin on the classic story.
