NASA Sets Aug. 30, 2026, Launch for Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
NASA has scheduled the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to launch Aug. 30, 2026, on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch is listed for 7:20 a.m. EDT from Launch Complex 39A.
The planned flight will begin a five-year space-observatory mission focused on some of astronomy’s biggest questions, including the nature of dark energy, the study of planets beyond the solar system and observations of the infrared universe.
NASA’s launch date is a schedule, not a completed event. Weather, technical readiness and range conditions could still affect the timing.
A wide survey of the universe
The Roman telescope is designed to examine enormous numbers of stars and galaxies over a broad area of the sky. NASA expects the mission to observe more than 100,000 distant worlds, hundreds of millions of stars and billions of galaxies during its projected five-year mission.
Those figures are mission expectations rather than completed observations or guaranteed discoveries. The scale of the planned survey is intended to give researchers large datasets for studying how the universe has changed and how planetary systems are distributed.
One central target is dark energy, the still poorly understood phenomenon associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion. By surveying distant galaxies and other cosmic structures, Roman is designed to provide observations that can help scientists investigate that acceleration and test competing explanations.
The mission will also search for and characterize exoplanets, or worlds orbiting stars beyond the sun. Its broad view is expected to complement more focused observations by identifying planetary systems and other targets for additional study.
Instruments and telescope design
Roman carries a Wide Field Instrument for its primary survey work. It also includes a Coronagraph Instrument technology demonstration. NASA describes the coronagraph as a test of technology intended to block or suppress a star’s light so that researchers can study much fainter objects nearby.
The observatory has a 2.4-meter primary mirror. NASA says the telescope’s combination of mirror size, wide-field viewing and infrared capabilities will allow it to collect data across large portions of the sky while investigating distant objects and planetary systems.
Infrared observations are important because infrared light can reveal objects and features that are difficult to see in visible light. For Roman, that capability will support research into distant galaxies, stellar populations and exoplanetary systems as part of the mission’s broader astrophysics program.
Final preparations at Kennedy Space Center
NASA’s mission materials say telescope construction has been completed and that the spacecraft has arrived at Kennedy Space Center. The agency has also described final launch preparations involving NASA facilities and scientific partners, including NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech/IPAC and the Space Telescope Science Institute.
The scheduled launch comes ahead of the earlier timetable described in a NASA release about the mission. The agency’s current mission page lists Aug. 30, 2026, at 7:20 a.m. EDT as the target.
If the flight proceeds as scheduled, Roman will add a major survey capability to U.S.-led space science. Its observations could expand researchers’ understanding of dark energy, improve knowledge of planets beyond the solar system and provide a large infrared view of the universe for scientists to analyze over the mission’s expected five years.
