NASA’s Roman Space Telescope remains scheduled for Aug. 30 launch
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope remains scheduled to launch Aug. 30, 2026, at 7:20 a.m. EDT, or 11:20 UTC, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The spacecraft is expected to fly aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A, the Florida launch site identified by NASA for the mission. The launch has not yet occurred, and the date remains a scheduled target rather than a completed event.
A wide-field view of the universe
Roman is designed to investigate some of the largest questions in modern astronomy, including the nature of dark energy, the study of planets beyond the solar system and broader problems in astrophysics.
NASA says the telescope will have a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s. In practical terms, that means Roman is being built to capture much broader portions of the sky in individual observations than the Hubble Space Telescope can.
That wide view is central to the mission’s scientific purpose. Rather than focusing only on individual objects or relatively small areas, Roman will conduct large surveys of galaxies and planetary systems. NASA says the mission could measure light from as many as one billion galaxies over its lifetime.
The scale of those observations is intended to give researchers a large collection of data for examining how the universe has changed and how its components are distributed. It also gives the mission a way to search across broad regions of space for signs of planets outside the solar system.
What Roman is meant to study
Dark energy is one of Roman’s central targets. The mission is designed to help scientists investigate the force or phenomenon associated with the accelerating expansion of the universe. Its planned observations will also contribute to exoplanet research and other areas of astrophysics.
Roman’s exoplanet work is part of the same wide-field strategy. By surveying large numbers of stars and planetary systems, the telescope is expected to expand the search for planets beyond the solar system and help scientists study how those systems are structured.
The mission is intended to operate near the Sun-Earth L2 region. NASA’s planned location for the spacecraft supports its long-duration observing program and its effort to survey large areas of the sky.
Launch plan and what happens next
NASA’s current mission information identifies Aug. 30, 2026, as the launch date and 7:20 a.m. EDT as the scheduled launch time. The agency’s event information also confirms the August 2026 mission date.
SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy is the launch vehicle named for the mission. The planned departure from Launch Complex 39A places Roman’s launch within NASA’s Kennedy Space Center operations in Florida.
NASA has also been fueling the spacecraft ahead of the planned August launch, according to reporting on the mission’s preparation. That work is part of the run-up to launch, but it does not change the status of the event: Roman remains scheduled to fly, not confirmed as launched.
If the mission lifts off on schedule, Roman will begin a major U.S. space-science effort aimed at combining wide-area observation with detailed study of the universe’s evolution and planetary systems. Its proposed survey scale—up to one billion galaxies and a field of view at least 100 times wider than Hubble’s—makes the launch an important milestone for astronomy and astrophysics.
