NSF announces $83 million investment in data systems for AI-driven science
The National Science Foundation announced $83 million in awards on July 22, 2026, for data systems intended to help researchers use scientific datasets with advanced computing, software and artificial-intelligence tools.
The awards were made through NSF’s Integrated Data Systems and Services program. The agency said the effort is designed to expand researchers’ access to interoperable data and the infrastructure needed to work with it, including computing resources, scientific instruments, software and AI systems.
The investment is part of a broader federal push to build an AI research ecosystem in the United States. NSF said the program complements the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource and other cyberinfrastructure investments.
Building connections between data and computing
Scientific data are often held in different repositories and organized in different ways. The NSF initiative is focused on making existing datasets more accessible, interoperable and usable by automated AI systems, according to the agency.
In practical terms, the effort is intended to make large collections of research data easier to find, combine and analyze alongside computing resources. That could broaden access to infrastructure used in federally supported research and help researchers move more efficiently from data collection to analysis.
The program is not a guarantee of particular scientific discoveries. NSF described the awards as an investment in the systems and services that support research, rather than as proof that AI will produce a specific breakthrough.
A national data fabric
One highlighted project is the Fabric for AI-Driven Science, led by the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, Wisconsin. NSF said the project is intended to build a national data fabric that connects scientific repositories, computing resources and cyberinfrastructure.
The goal is to link parts of the research environment that are often used together but may be managed through separate systems. Connecting those resources could give researchers more consistent ways to locate and use data with software, instruments and high-performance computing.
NSF did not describe the Fabric project as a replacement for existing research infrastructure. Instead, the agency presented it as part of an effort to connect and strengthen the national infrastructure already used by researchers.
Part of the Genesis Mission
NSF also linked the initiative to the broader Genesis Mission, an administration effort that uses AI and scientific datasets to accelerate discovery in national-priority areas.
In a related statement, NSF said it is working with federal partners to advance the mission as an all-of-government effort across science and engineering. The agency has framed the work as supporting U.S. leadership in AI, an AI-ready workforce and the ability of researchers to compete globally.
That framing places the data awards at the intersection of research infrastructure and national technology policy. The immediate focus is not only on developing AI systems, but also on preparing the data, software and computing connections those systems need to be useful in scientific work.
What happens next
The announcement identifies the program and the national data-fabric project, but it does not provide a single completion deadline for all funded projects. The timing and detailed scope of individual efforts will therefore depend on the projects supported through the program.
For researchers, the intended benefit is improved access to data and infrastructure across institutional and technical boundaries. For the broader U.S. research system, NSF is using the awards to pursue a more connected foundation for AI-assisted science while developing the workforce and partnerships needed to use it.
