Winter Storm Response and Recovery
Garland faced significant challenges due to a recent winter storm, which led to school closures and residents being homebound. City crews worked tirelessly for over 120 continuous hours to address the situation. The Police and Fire departments responded to accidents and assisted stranded motorists, even walking an elderly man back to his nursing home. The Street Department operated sand spreader trucks around the clock, distributing more than 175 tons of sand across the city’s 57 square miles. Additionally, Garland Power & Light (GP&L) and Water Utilities replaced transformers and repaired water main breaks, restoring services swiftly. The Animal Services team continued operations, caring for shelter pets and reuniting them with their owners. Other departments, including Transportation, Fleet, Facilities, Parks & Recreation, and the Office of Emergency Management, also played crucial roles in the response efforts. Residents have expressed gratitude for these dedicated services, sharing their appreciation on social media platforms.
Community Appreciation for Responders
In the aftermath of the winter storm, Garland residents have shown immense gratitude towards the city’s responders. Through social media and the city’s website, residents have shared stories and expressed thanks for the around-the-clock efforts of various city departments. One resident, Vivien Khuu, emailed her appreciation after being towed to safety, stating, “I am writing this letter with a heart full of profound gratitude.” Another resident, Joyce Boardman-Miller, expressed thanks to GP&L for restoring power quickly, noting, “HUGE thank you to GP&L on getting our power back on this morning. From outage to back on, in about 2 hours.” These heartfelt messages highlight the community’s appreciation for the dedicated service provided during challenging times.
Spring Creek Forest Preserve Update
The City of Garland is committed to the care and recovery of the Spring Creek Forest Preserve. In October 2025, the Garland City Council approved a contract with Kimley-Horn & Associates, Inc. to conduct a condition assessment of the preserve. Phase 1 of this assessment is currently underway, focusing on protecting the preserve and understanding existing conditions before making future decisions. This initiative underscores the city’s dedication to preserving natural spaces and ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
