Chesapeake Daily Brief: Gilmerton Bridge crashes, light snow totals, and City Council tonight
Chesapeake, VA – February 24, 2026 – Gilmerton Bridge area traffic has reopened after early crashes; light snow totals were measured around the city; flags are set for half-staf…
Good afternoon, Chesapeake. Today’s local lineup is about getting around safely, watching for leftover slick spots, and keeping an eye on a full evening schedule at City Hall.
Traffic: Gilmerton Bridge area reopens after early crashes
Drivers saw major delays along South Military Highway near the Gilmerton Bridge after multiple crashes triggered a temporary shutdown in both directions. City updates later indicated the roadway had reopened.
Even with lanes moving again, the bigger takeaway is timing: backups can linger as traffic patterns reset. If you’re heading through the area, expect the possibility of slowdowns while congestion clears.
Weather: Light snow totals logged across Chesapeake
Snowfall reports from the National Weather Service’s Wakefield office showed light-but-notable accumulation across the city by 7 a.m. Even small totals can create trouble on bridges and in shaded spots, especially during peak drive times.
- About 0.5 inch was reported near Herbert’s Corner.
- Around 1 inch was reported in the Portlock area.
If your route includes overpasses or less-traveled side streets, it may still be worth taking it slow.
State note with local ties: Flags to half-staff Saturday
The Governor has directed U.S. and Virginia flags on state and local government buildings to be lowered at sunrise on Saturday, February 28, and remain at half-staff until sunset, in memory of Delegate Barry D. Knight. Knight represented parts of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach and died on February 19.
At City Hall: Council meetings scheduled tonight
Chesapeake City Council is scheduled to meet in City Hall’s Council Chambers, with multiple sessions on the calendar:
- Closed meeting at 4:45 p.m.
- Work session from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m.
- Regular council meeting at 6:30 p.m.
If you plan to follow the evening agenda, the staggered start times are worth noting so you don’t miss the portion you care about.
