Chesapeake HRBT Expansion lane closures July 3–10: overnight I-64 watch
Chesapeake VA – VDOT and the HRBT Expansion Project post the July 3–10 work-zone schedule, including I-64 Express Lanes ramp and overnight lane closures.
Chesapeake commuters heading toward Norfolk and points across the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel should plan for overnight work-zone impacts this week. The HRBT Expansion Project lists a weekly lane-closure window for Friday, July 3 through Friday, July 10, and VDOT’s Hampton Roads District weekly traffic alert highlights the key late-night I-64 and Bridge-Tunnel impacts that affect Chesapeake routes.
The holiday “pause” (what VDOT says could be lighter on July 3–5)
VDOT says it will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads for holiday travel from noon Thursday, July 2 until noon Monday, July 6. So, during the July 3–5 part of the window, you may see fewer routine interstate/major-road lane impacts than later in the week.
VDOT also notes the closures are scheduled weather permitting and can change.
I-64 Express Lanes (HREL): full ramp closures July 6–10 (late night)
For the strongest Chesapeake impacts, watch I-64 and the Express Lanes ramp work scheduled for Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10. VDOT’s traffic alert describes full ramp closures as early as 9 p.m. to as late as 5 a.m. for the following ramp movements:
- Off-ramp from I-64 west to Armistead Avenue / LaSalle Avenue (exit 265B)
- Off-ramp I-64 east to Rip Rap Road, Armistead Avenue / Langley AFB (exit 265C)
- Settlers Landing Road / Woodland Road (on-ramps and off-ramps connecting to I-64 west/east)
If your commute depends on one of these exits or ramps, build in extra time and double-check which ramp you need before leaving.
More I-64 overnight impacts in Chesapeake (Mallory to LaSalle)
Alongside the Express Lanes ramp work, VDOT schedules additional overnight I-64 impacts in Chesapeake:
- Alternating single-lane closures in both directions on I-64 from Mallory Street (exit 268) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265), 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on July 6–10.
- Brief, intermittent stoppages in both directions between Mallory Street (exit 268) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265), 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. on July 7–11.
- Traffic shift on I-64 west from the inside lanes to the outside lanes, as early as overnight July 7.
Because these are late-night work windows that can begin “as early as” late evening, plan for the possibility of slowdowns even when work starts before midnight.
Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64): night closures during the same week
The HRBT schedule also includes single-lane closures tied to tunnel work during the nights in this window:
- Eastbound: July 6 and July 8 (from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
- Westbound: July 7 (from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
Even a single-lane closure can slow tunnel-approach travel for Chesapeake drivers during the overnight commute window.
How to check updates in real time (before you leave)
VDOT directs drivers to 511 Virginia for updated work-zone and lane-closure status as conditions change through the week. That matters because VDOT’s schedules are weather-permitting and subject to change.
Bottom line for Chesapeake: expect the most significant impacts during the late-night hours as early as 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from July 6–10, especially near I-64 Express Lanes and the ramp areas listed above.
