Chesapeake voters head to the polls Tuesday in the August primary

Chesapeake voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Aug. 4, for Virginia’s dual primary election. Polling places will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Early in-person voting ended Saturday, Aug. 1. Voters who did not vote early must use their assigned precinct on Election Day, with one temporary polling-place change affecting Precinct 36.

What is on the ballot

The Republican primary is for the U.S. Senate. The Democratic primary is for the 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House.

Voters may choose either party’s primary ballot regardless of political affiliation, but each voter may vote in only one primary.

Check your assigned polling place

Election Day voters must report to the precinct assigned to their registration. Before leaving home, use the City of Chesapeake’s voting-place lookup or the Virginia Department of Elections’ voter information tools to confirm your precinct and polling location.

The city’s sample-ballot and precinct-list page can also help voters check their precinct and ballot style. Bring an approved form of identification when voting in person.

Temporary change for Precinct 36

Voters who normally cast ballots at Great Bridge Baptist Church in Precinct 36 will vote at Great Bridge Middle School, Precinct 63, for this election only.

This is an Election Day change, not a permanent reassignment. Precinct 36 voters should still verify their registration information and assigned location through the official lookup before traveling to the polls.

Absentee ballots and drop boxes

The deadline to request a mailed absentee ballot was 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 24. For voters who already have a ballot, a mailed ballot must be postmarked by Aug. 4 and received by the Chesapeake Voter Registrar’s Office by noon Friday, Aug. 7.

Voters returning a completed ballot in person must ensure it reaches the registrar’s office by 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. The General Registrar’s Office at 411 Cedar Road has a monitored outdoor drop box available 24 hours a day. The registrar’s office is not an in-person polling location on Election Day.

On Election Day, drop boxes will also be available at polling places and at the registrar’s office until 7:00 p.m. Voters using a polling-place drop box should follow the instructions at that location and deposit the ballot before the deadline.

Election Day checklist

• Plan to vote Tuesday, Aug. 4, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• Choose either the Republican Senate primary or the Democratic 2nd Congressional District primary—not both.
• Verify your assigned precinct and polling location before leaving home.
• If you are assigned to Precinct 36, go to Great Bridge Middle School for this election.
• Bring an approved ID.
• If returning an absentee ballot, use an authorized drop box or the mail and observe the applicable deadline.
