Chesapeake early voting ends April 18, and schools switch to asynchronous learning April 21
Chesapeake VA – Saturday is the last day for in-person early voting at 411 Cedar Road, and Chesapeake Public Schools will shift to asynchronous learning on April 21.
Saturday, April 18, is the last day Chesapeake residents can vote early in person before the April 21 special election. The Chesapeake voter registrar says early voting is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the General Registrar’s Office, 411 Cedar Road. For many households, the same date also starts the final planning window for Tuesday, when Chesapeake Public Schools will move all students to an asynchronous day.
Last chance for in-person early voting
Chesapeake’s weekday early-voting window ended Friday, leaving one final Saturday option. Voting is available only at the General Registrar’s Office, not at neighborhood precincts, and Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
That matters for voters who want to avoid Election Day lines or who may have work, child-care, or transportation conflicts on Tuesday. Chesapeake’s election deadlines page also shows that the deadline to request a mailed ballot was April 10, so residents who did not already ask for one cannot start that process now.
What changes on Tuesday, April 21
Once early voting closes Saturday, Chesapeake switches to precinct-only voting. The Chesapeake 2026 Special Election voters guide says polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, and the Registrar’s Office will not serve as an in-person polling place that day. Voters need to go to their assigned precinct and should bring an approved ID.
The regular deadline to register or update registration for a standard ballot was April 14. For anyone who missed that cutoff, the Virginia Department of Elections says same-day registration is available beginning April 15, but those voters cast a provisional ballot rather than a regular one.
Residents who already have an absentee ballot still have time to return it. According to the Chesapeake voters guide, mailed ballots must be postmarked by April 21 and received by noon on April 24. Ballots returned in person must be turned in by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Why Chesapeake students will learn from home Tuesday
Chesapeake Public Schools says April 21 is now an asynchronous day for all students, which means students will not report to school buildings. The district also says meals will be available at select school sites, though families should watch Chesapeake Public Schools for the site list and timing details.
The schedule change is tied directly to election operations. WHRO reported that the Chesapeake School Board approved the asynchronous remote day after Superintendent Jared Cotton said 17 schools are polling locations and raised student-safety concerns. That makes the election a practical planning issue for families, not just a civic one.
What residents should do now
If early voting is your plan, Saturday is the last in-person chance, and the location is 411 Cedar Road. If you are voting Tuesday, confirm your assigned precinct before leaving home rather than heading to the Registrar’s Office. And if you have Chesapeake Public Schools students, plan for an at-home learning day and watch for any meal pickup details the district posts before April 21.
