The work also includes a mix of upgrades beyond the express lanes, including added general-purpose capacity in parts of the corridor and interchange improvements that officials say should help traffic flow as the area continues to grow.

Public safety: East Charlotte shooting sends one to the hospital

Police and MEDIC responded overnight to a shooting in east Charlotte that left one person with life-threatening injuries. The call came in just before 2 a.m. near the 6500 block of E. W.T. Harris Boulevard, according to emergency responders.

Details were limited as of Saturday morning, and the investigation remained active.

Neighborhood change: Plaza Midwood bar set to close

A well-known Plaza Midwood spot is saying goodbye. Southern Strain Brewing announced it would close its Charlotte location at the end of the weekend, marking the end of a five-year run in the neighborhood.

The business said it planned a final send-off on Saturday and will continue operating at its original Concord location.

Community note: Hornets Foundation backs bilingual early education
