Charlotte Updates: Red Line Funding, I-77 Fatality, Pinky’s Expansion

Charlotte’s week has brought a mix of long-term transit planning, sudden traffic tragedy and fresh restaurant expansion news.

City Council Advances Red Line Design

Charlotte City Council voted Monday night to move the long-awaited Red Line commuter rail project further into the design phase.

Council approved $1.5 million to push engineering plans to 30 percent completion, bringing the total contract value with HDR Engineering to more than $43 million. The proposed 25-mile rail line would connect uptown to Davidson, with the potential to extend into Iredell County.

Leaders noted the work is required under state law before other related transit projects can move forward. The Red Line is funded through Mecklenburg County’s voter-approved one-cent sales tax increase.

Fatal Medical Emergency Shuts Down I-77

A fatal medical emergency disrupted the Monday morning commute in southwest Charlotte.

Officials closed three of four southbound lanes on Interstate 77 between Arrowood Road and I-485 around 8:30 a.m. MEDIC confirmed one person died at the scene.

Traffic was diverted onto I-485, causing significant backups during peak travel time. All lanes later reopened, but the incident added to an already busy start to the week for drivers.

Pinky’s Westside Grill Eyes East Charlotte

On the business front, a well-known local restaurant is preparing to grow.

Pinky’s Westside Grill is eyeing a second location at the former Grinning Mule property in east Charlotte. The restaurant first opened in west Charlotte in 2010 and has since built a loyal following.

No firm opening date has been announced, but ownership hopes to launch the new location by summer. The expansion marks another investment in Charlotte’s evolving east-side dining scene.
