Fresno County Secures Homeless Funds; Deadly Crash and Downtown Shooting Under Investigation

Fresno, CA – March 12, 2026 – Fresno County lands $10.1M for homelessness as police probe a deadly teen crash and a downtown bus shooting.

It has been a busy and consequential week across Fresno County, with major funding news and several serious public safety incidents unfolding.

$10.1 Million for Homeless Services

Fresno County and the Fresno Madera Continuum of Care have been awarded $10.1 million in state funding to strengthen the region’s homeless response system.

County leaders say the money will support emergency and youth shelters, rental assistance, prevention programs and expanded street outreach. The award follows a recent shift that placed Fresno County in charge of coordinating homelessness services across the two-county region.

Officials say the goal is a more streamlined approach that moves people from encampments into stable housing faster, while improving coordination among local agencies.

Teen Killed in Parlier Crash

A 15-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle in Parlier, near Mendocino and Parlier avenues. Authorities say the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the teen, who was crossing the street.

The driver suffered minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation, and the victim’s name has not yet been released. The incident has prompted renewed concerns about traffic safety in smaller Fresno County communities.

Downtown Fresno Shooting, Sentencing Update

Police are also investigating a shooting that left an Amtrak bus driver hospitalized in downtown Fresno this week. Details about a suspect have not yet been released.

In a separate case, a man was sentenced in connection with a 2021 shooting death in central Fresno, bringing closure to a years-long homicide case.

Transportation Tax Debate Heats Up

Meanwhile, several smaller Fresno County cities have taken positions on competing proposals to renew Measure C, the county’s half-cent transportation sales tax. The debate centers on how future road repairs, transit improvements and infrastructure projects should be funded and prioritized.

With endorsements now splitting along regional lines, voters are likely to hear much more about the competing plans in the months ahead.
