Chesapeake-area fuel prices ease slightly; diesel stays $1.73 above 2025
AAA’s July 28 metro check shows regular gas and diesel edged down from the previous day, but both remain higher than a week, month and year ago.
Regular gasoline and diesel prices in the Chesapeake area edged lower in AAA’s July 28, 2026, price check, but both remain substantially higher than they were during the same period last year.
AAA reported an average of $4.034 per gallon for regular gasoline in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro area, which includes Chesapeake. That was down 0.6 cents from the previous day, but up 6.8 cents from a week earlier, 32.4 cents from a month earlier and 96 cents from a year earlier.
Diesel remains the bigger pressure point
Diesel averaged $5.311 per gallon across the same metro area. The price fell 0.2 cents from the previous day, but it was 12.3 cents higher than a week earlier, 40.7 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.732 higher than a year earlier.
The separate movements matter for different groups of drivers. A small one-day decline may offer limited relief at the pump, but the longer-term comparisons show that fuel costs remain elevated for people who commute, make deliveries or operate commercial vehicles.
Metro figures are not a Chesapeake-only average
The AAA numbers are for the broader Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro region, not a citywide Chesapeake-only average. AAA’s statewide Virginia average on July 28 was lower: $3.972 for regular gasoline and $5.296 for diesel.
That difference means prices can vary between nearby stations, even when the regional trend is moving in one direction. A station-level Chesapeake listing can help drivers compare pumps, but it should not be treated as the same thing as an official citywide average.
What higher fuel costs can mean locally
For households, the annual increase in regular gasoline can raise the cost of routine commuting, school trips, errands and weekend travel. Diesel prices can create additional operating pressure for delivery fleets, contractors, maintenance companies, landscapers, restaurants and other businesses that use commercial vehicles or rely on transported goods.
Those effects are potential cost pressures, not proof that a particular Chesapeake business has raised prices. The next AAA update will show whether the recent daily easing continues or gives way to another increase.
