Charlotte-area gas rises to $3.849 while diesel climbs above $5.27

Regular gasoline and diesel moved in different directions over the past week in the Charlotte area, according to AAA’s July 31, 2026, price check. Regular gas averaged $3.849 per gallon in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill metro area, up 0.7 cents from the previous day but down 5.1 cents from a week earlier.

Diesel averaged $5.276 per gallon, rising 5.2 cents overnight and increasing 5.5 cents from the previous week. The figures are metro averages, not the exact price at every station in Charlotte.

Gasoline is easing week to week

AAA’s regular-gasoline average was $3.842 on July 30 and $3.900 a week earlier. That makes Friday’s average slightly higher than the previous day but lower than the prior week’s price.

The longer comparisons remain higher. Regular gas was up 33.9 cents from a month earlier, when the metro average was $3.510. Compared with a year ago, the average was 92.9 cents higher than the $2.920 price AAA listed for the same metro area.

For commuters and households, the weekly decline offers some relief compared with last week, but the month-to-month and year-over-year gaps still point to a considerably higher cost for routine driving and weekend travel than at those earlier points.

Diesel moves higher and stays above $5.27

Diesel’s trend was less favorable. AAA listed the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill average at $5.224 on July 30 and $5.221 a week earlier. Friday’s $5.276 average was therefore 5.2 cents higher overnight and 5.5 cents higher over the week.

The month and year comparisons were larger still. Diesel was up 57.3 cents from the $4.703 average recorded a month earlier and $1.726 above the $3.550 average from a year earlier.

That increase matters beyond drivers of diesel-powered vehicles. Higher diesel costs can add pressure to freight, delivery routes, contractor equipment, service calls and other transportation-heavy operations. Restaurants and other businesses that depend on deliveries may also watch fuel costs when reviewing operating expenses, although the AAA data does not document specific local business reactions.

EIA provides regional context

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 27 Lower Atlantic figures provide a broader regional comparison. EIA listed regular gasoline at $3.867 per gallon and on-highway diesel at $5.255 per gallon for the Lower Atlantic region.

Those are regional figures, not Charlotte prices, and the EIA release date was four days earlier than AAA’s metro check. On that basis, the AAA Charlotte-area gasoline average was 1.8 cents below the EIA regional gasoline figure, while the AAA diesel average was 2.1 cents above the EIA regional diesel figure.

What to watch next

The next AAA price check will show whether regular gas continues its recent weekly easing or turns higher again, and whether diesel’s increase remains in place. For households, commuters, contractors, delivery drivers and weekend travelers, the separate movements are worth tracking rather than treating gasoline and diesel as one trend.
