Chesapeake-area gas slips below $4; diesel rises above $5.30

Regular gasoline slipped below $4 per gallon in the Hampton Roads metro in AAA’s July 31, 2026, price check, while diesel moved higher and remained above $5.30. The opposing daily moves leave Chesapeake commuters and fuel-dependent businesses watching two different trends at the pump.

AAA listed regular gasoline at an average of $3.996 per gallon, down 1.2 cents from $4.008 the previous day. The metro average also declined from $4.057 a week earlier, but remained above $3.692 a month earlier and $3.102 a year earlier.

Diesel followed the opposite path. AAA reported an average of $5.316 per gallon, up 0.5 cent from $5.311 the previous day and higher than $5.291 a week earlier. Diesel also remained substantially above the month-ago average of $4.871 and the year-ago average of $3.649.

Hampton Roads average, not a Chesapeake-only price

The figures are for the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metropolitan area, which includes Chesapeake but is not a separate Chesapeake citywide average. Individual stations can charge more or less depending on location, competition, operating costs and other factors.

At the 7-Eleven at 4000 Portsmouth Blvd. in Chesapeake, the station listing showed regular gasoline at $3.899 per gallon and diesel at $5.229, with prices updated within 24 hours. That station-level snapshot illustrates why drivers should compare nearby listings rather than assume every pump matches the metro average.

What the split means locally

For households, the slight daily decline in regular gasoline offers limited relief because the metro average is still higher than it was one month and one year ago. Commuters with long drives, families traveling over the weekend and residents making multiple trips may continue to feel the higher baseline in their weekly budgets.

The diesel increase matters differently for contractors, delivery operators, landscapers, utility-service companies and other businesses that rely on heavier vehicles. Higher diesel costs can raise operating expenses even when regular gasoline is easing, creating pressure for businesses that must balance fuel, labor, materials and delivery costs.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration tracks broader gasoline and diesel market conditions, but national and regional figures should not be treated as Chesapeake prices. For local decisions, the most useful comparison remains the actual pump price at nearby stations.
