Alexandria-Area Gas Slips to $4.02 as Diesel Rises to $5.397
Regular gas eased slightly in the latest Alexandria-serving metro check, but diesel rose again, keeping fuel costs high for commuters and local businesses.
Regular gasoline and diesel moved in opposite directions in the latest price check serving Alexandria. AAAโs August 1, 2026, snapshot listed regular gas at $4.020 per gallon in the Washington, D.C., Virginia-only metro, while diesel reached $5.397.
Those figures describe the Alexandria-serving metro area, not a citywide average for every station in Alexandria. Pump prices can vary by station, ZIP code and time of day.
Regular gas is slightly lower short term
AAAโs regular-gas average was down 0.4 cents from the previous day and down 5.4 cents from a week earlier. The short-term easing has not erased the longer-term increase: the average was up 22.6 cents from a month earlier and 87.6 cents from the same point last year.
For Alexandria-area households and commuters, that means a small break compared with the previous daily and weekly checks, but fuel remains a substantially larger expense than it was a year ago. Drivers planning weekend trips or regular commutes may still see meaningful differences between stations.
Diesel continues to climb
Diesel moved higher across every comparison window listed by AAA. The $5.397 metro average was up 0.3 cents from the previous day, 2.7 cents from the previous week, 54.7 cents from the previous month and $1.606 from a year earlier.
That increase matters beyond commercial trucking. Contractors, delivery companies, landscapers, restaurants, service businesses and other operators with diesel-powered vehicles may face higher operating costs. Those costs can affect delivery charges, service prices or the cost of moving materials, although the available price data does not identify a specific cause for the gas-diesel split.
Alexandria station prices can differ
Virginiaโs statewide averages were lower than the Alexandria-serving metro averages on August 1: $3.935 for regular gas and $5.323 for diesel. A 7-Eleven listing for 6401 Lansdowne Centre Drive in Alexandria showed diesel at $5.499 within the prior 24 hours. That is one stationโs posted price, not proof that all Alexandria stations were above the metro average.
The U.S. Energy Information Administrationโs next weekly gasoline and diesel update was scheduled for August 4. Until then, station-level prices may change throughout the day even if the broader metro average moves only slightly.
