Alexandria Completes Initial Study of Proposed Beauregard Trail Extension

Alexandria has completed an initial feasibility study for a proposed extension of the Beauregard Trail, giving the city a more defined concept for a north-south bicycle and pedestrian corridor without committing the project to construction.

The proposed extension would run approximately 1.5 miles along North Beauregard Street, from the current trail terminus at Fillmore Avenue to the western Alexandria boundary with Fairfax County. The City of Alexandria posted updated project materials on July 6, 2026, identifying the initial study as complete.

What the proposal would connect

The study focuses on a continuous trail along the North Beauregard Street corridor. The city’s project materials describe that corridor as containing high-density residential neighborhoods, employment centers, transit centers, parks, retail and schools.

That mix gives the proposal a transportation purpose beyond recreation. If the concept advances, the corridor could provide a bicycle and pedestrian connection between Alexandria neighborhoods and destinations that include jobs, transit, stores, schools and Northern Virginia Community College.

The studied segment also reaches toward Fairfax County. The project materials identify the Fairfax County boundary as the western end of the study area, but they do not establish that a completed trail will ultimately be built to that line.

A study, not a construction decision

The completed feasibility study is an early project step. The approved materials do not identify a final design, a construction date, a grant award or a commitment of construction funding.

That distinction is important for people who live, work, attend school or travel along North Beauregard Street. The study provides a defined corridor that can be evaluated for future design and funding, but it does not yet change transportation conditions on the street or establish when construction could begin.

The city says a feasible concept could help Alexandria leverage future grant funding for full design and implementation. In practical terms, the study may give the city material to use when seeking outside support, while the project’s eventual cost, design details and construction schedule remain unresolved in the reviewed materials.

Project timeline and next step

City staff presented the project to the Traffic and Parking Board on May 18, 2026. The city’s docket system lists the archived transportation and planning records associated with that presentation.

The July 6 project-page update marks the completion of the initial study. The next known step is potential work toward grant applications, full design and implementation if Alexandria decides to advance the concept and identifies funding.

For now, the Beauregard Trail extension remains a proposed transportation project supported by an initial feasibility study. Alexandria has a studied 1.5-mile corridor and a potential basis for pursuing future grants, but the city has not announced final approval, construction funding or a delivery date.
