WK Kellogg begins final wave of Omaha plant layoffs as closure nears

The final major phase of layoffs at WK Kellogg Co.’s Omaha plant is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Aug. 4, with approximately 350 permanent employment losses expected during the following two-week period.

The company’s May 22 filing with the Nebraska Department of Labor identifies the facility at 9601 F Street and says the layoffs are part of a phased reduction in force. The plant is expected to permanently cease operations in August 2026.

Most remaining layoffs are scheduled for August

The WARN filing lists 451 affected employees in total. Approximately 100 workers were included in the earlier phase, which runs through Aug. 3. The remaining approximately 350 employment losses are scheduled across the 14-day period beginning Aug. 4 and ending Aug. 18.

The filing does not say that all 350 workers will be separated on Aug. 4. Instead, it places those expected losses across the scheduled period.

Nebraska Public Media and WOWT independently reported the two-phase schedule and the expected August closure.

Union and non-union employees included

The affected workforce includes both union and non-union employees, according to the filing. The applicable bargaining representative is the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers union and its Local 50-G.

WK Kellogg said it will provide severance payments to affected employees. The filing does not specify individual severance amounts or provide information about workers’ future employment or unemployment eligibility.

Closure remains expected, not completed

WK Kellogg announced the Omaha plant closure in August 2024. The current WARN filing describes the shutdown as a planned action, with operations expected to end permanently in August 2026.

For workers and their families, the immediate development is the beginning of the final scheduled layoff phase. The plant’s permanent closure remains an expected future event subject to the company’s schedule and any subsequent developments.
