Thornton opens applications for city advisory boards, including a Ward 2 vacancy

Thornton residents have until 5 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, to apply for a Ward 2 seat on the Thornton Active Adult Board. The city is also accepting applications for several other boards and commissions with deadlines later in August.

The openings provide residents a way to participate in advisory work before City Council considers appointments. The application deadlines do not represent final selections or guarantees of appointment.

Active Adult Board focuses on older residents and city services

The Thornton Active Adult Board advises City Council on matters affecting the needs and interests of residents age 55 and older. It also makes recommendations about the most appropriate and beneficial use of the Thornton Active Adult Center and ways to improve or expand citywide services for active adults.

The board generally meets at the Active Adult Center on the third Wednesday of January, April and October at 1:30 p.m., and on the third Wednesday of July at 4 p.m.

The city’s application form describes an 11-member board with representation from each ward, the business community, one member recommended by the 55+ Organization, Inc., one member recommended by the mayor and four members appointed at large. Nine members must be 55 years old at the time of appointment. That qualification does not mean the current listing requires every applicant to be 55 or older.

• Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council Board of Directors: Ward 2, deadline August 20, 2026, at 5 p.m.
• Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission: Wards 1 and 3, deadline August 21, 2026, at 5 p.m.
• Building Code Advisory Board: Ward 1, deadline August 25, 2026, at 5 p.m.
• Election Commission: Ward 2, deadline August 25, 2026, at 5 p.m.
• Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment: Ward 2, deadline August 30, 2026, at 5 p.m.

The Planning Commission holds public hearings on issues including annexations, zoning amendments, new-use classifications, conceptual site plans, comprehensive-plan amendments and certain development permits. The Board of Adjustment holds public hearings on variances and appeals.

Applicants should review the instructions for the specific board or commission before submitting materials. City Council policy limits a person to one appointment to a city board, commission or authority.

For the Active Adult Board opening, the immediate deadline is 5 p.m. Saturday, August 8. The later openings give residents additional opportunities to apply through August 20, August 21, August 25 or August 30, depending on the position.
