Thornton Police Department Announces New Community Programs and Safety Measures
The Thornton Police Department has unveiled several initiatives designed to strengthen community engagement and improve public safety.
Spring 2026 55+ Citizens Police Academy
Starting April 8, 2026, the department will host the Spring 2026 55+ Citizens Police Academy. This program offers community members aged 55 and older an inside look at law enforcement operations, covering topics such as daily responsibilities of officers, life and health planning, and crime prevention strategies. Sessions will be held weekly for six weeks at the Thornton Active Adult Center, located at 11181 Colorado Boulevard.
Red-light and Mobile Speed Photo Safety Program
To enhance traffic safety, the Thornton Police Department is implementing an automated traffic safety program. Red-light cameras will be installed at the following intersections:
- East 88th Avenue and Washington Street
- East 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard
Additionally, two mobile speed enforcement vehicles will be deployed at various high-risk locations throughout the city. All cameras are expected to be operational by the end of 2025. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the Thornton Police Department’s official channels for updates on warning periods and live dates.
Co-Responder Program
The Thornton Police Department’s Co-Responder Program pairs a master’s level mental health clinician with a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained officer to respond to 911 calls involving behavioral health issues. This collaborative approach aims to de-escalate situations and provide appropriate resources, reducing the need for police force and ensuring safety for all parties involved.
Non-Emergency Line Updates
Improvements have been made to the department’s non-emergency line (720-977-5150). Callers will now hear an automated message in both English and Spanish, offering options to connect with various resources, including records, code compliance, municipal court, and non-emergency police, fire, medical, and animal control services. For immediate emergencies, residents should continue to call or text 9-1-1.
Top Stolen Vehicles in 2025
The Thornton Police Department has released a list of the top stolen vehicles in the city for 2025. The list includes:
- Chevrolet Silverado (2000–2007)
- Hyundai Elantra (2013–2018)
- GMC Sierra (2002–2006)
- Hyundai Sonata (2012–2015)

- Kia Optima (2013–2016)
- Ford F-150 (no particular year)
- GMC Yukon (2001–2005)
- Kia Soul (2016–2020)
Residents are advised to take precautions to protect their vehicles, such as always locking doors, hiding valuables from plain sight, never leaving vehicles running unattended, considering anti-theft devices, and parking in well-lit areas. If suspicious activity is observed, individuals should call 9-1-1 immediately and avoid approaching suspects.
