Kentucky tax portal set to reopen Aug. 14 after system conversion
Kentucky’s Department of Revenue planned to resume normal operations Friday, Aug. 14, after a scheduled Aug. 5-13 pause for a tax-system conversion. Five business-tax areas are moving into the MyTaxes online portal, so affected businesses must review their access and link the appropriate accounts before filing.
The transition affects rental-rideshare, sports-wagering, electric-vehicle-power, insurance, and health-care-provider and ground-ambulance-provider taxes. It changes how those businesses access and file their taxes; it does not enact a new tax.
Which businesses are affected
Rental-rideshare, sports-wagering and electric-vehicle-power taxes, which some businesses previously filed electronically, are now accessed through MyTaxes.
Insurance and health-care-provider-related taxes, including ground-ambulance-provider taxes, were previously filed on paper. Beginning Aug. 14, those returns must be filed electronically through MyTaxes.
The Department of Revenue says the move is part of a multiyear upgrade to its tax system. The agency has said the broader upgrade is intended to improve security, accuracy and online access to tax information.
What existing filers need to do
Businesses that have used MyTaxes before should log in with their existing credentials. The newly transitioned tax types should then be available within the account, but the business must be linked to access the records.
Businesses that have not used MyTaxes before but previously filed rental-rideshare, sports-wagering or electric-vehicle-power taxes electronically can use the same login information they already use for electronic filing. They should access MyTaxes through the Kentucky Department of Revenue tax dashboard and link the business.
Businesses that previously filed insurance or health-care-provider taxes on paper and have not used MyTaxes must create an account and link the business before accessing records or filing electronically.
A PIN may be required before filing
Until a business has filed a return after Aug. 14, users must use MyTaxes’ “Request a PIN” process to link the business, according to the Department of Revenue.
The department says MyTaxes works best on a laptop or desktop computer. Technical assistance is available through the Customer Contact Center at 502-764-5555 for navigation, password resets, browser issues and general questions about the transition.
Older records may not appear
Businesses should not assume that every prior return or payment will appear in the portal. The Department of Revenue says returns and payments processed before the relevant tax type was added to MyTaxes will not be visible there.
That limitation may matter to businesses moving from paper filing or checking older payment history. Filers may need to rely on prior notices and correspondence or contact the department for help locating information that is not available in MyTaxes.
What happens next
The department’s Aug. 4 notice said its systems and online tax portals, including MyTaxes, would be unavailable during the Aug. 5-13 pause, while staff could provide only limited assistance because they could not view taxpayer information. The agency intended to resume normal operations Friday, Aug. 14.
Affected businesses should log in, create an account if necessary, link each relevant business and confirm portal access before their next filing. The transition guidance reviewed for this article does not announce a change to a filing deadline.
